Many of these searches come from Indian exam questions. That phrasing is used for abbreviations such as NASA or ISRO. Amazon is not one of those. Neither is Google, Apple or Meta.
Where the Name Came From
The founder, Jeff Bezos, did not pick Amazon first. The company was first registered under the name Cadabra, Inc.
That name was dropped quickly. A lawyer heard it over the phone as cadaver, which was not the impression a new bookstore wanted.
Bezos also owned the domain relentless.com and considered it. That domain still redirects to Amazon today.
He settled on Amazon for a simple reason. The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by water volume, and he wanted a name that suggested very large scale.
The letter A helped as well. Early web directories listed sites alphabetically, so a name starting with A appeared near the top.
What the Word Amazon Means
The river gives the word its everyday meaning. The Amazon is a river in South America that carries more water than any other river on Earth.
The older meaning comes from Greek stories. The Amazons were a group of women warriors in those stories. The river was given the name by early European explorers who claimed to have fought such warriors there.
In Hindi and other languages, the answer does not change. Amazon has no expanded form in any language. It is simply the company name, borrowed from the river.
